Another picture of that huge nugget I blogged about yesterday (thank you BoingBoing). It’s called the Ausrox Gold Nugget by the way, named after the company that brokered the deal. Not a very original name, I am afraid. My suggestion would be: the blob nugget.

Last weekend the Western Australian gold prospectors assembled for their annual meeting at the pub in Ora Banda, a hamlet in the Western Australian outback. At the end of the meeting a nugget buyer from Perth, a guy named Andy Comas, made quite an interesting announcement: he recently acquired and sold a nugget weighing 23.26 kilogram, making it the world’s third largest gold nugget in existence (just after the Hand of Faith at 27.21 kg and the Normandy Nugget at 25.5 kg). When Andy showed a picture of the monster the bar went dead quiet. People just couldn’t take their eyes of it. This was of course what every prospector dreams of and keeps him going: the bloody big one!

The nugget had been found a couple of weeks ago with a metal detector somewhere in the goldfields around here. Through various tests it had been established that the thing has a 92% purity. With today’s gold price of around 40 US Dollars a gram, the gold value of this baby would be around 860.000 dollars. But of course, nuggets of that rarity go for two, three times the gold value.

Anyway, Andy said that the prospector who found it, and who wishes to remain anonymous, gave him a week to sell it. Andy sold it for an undisclosed sum within a couple of days to a buyer in the US. No Australian could come up with the money, somewhat surprising with all the filthy rich mining executives around here.

Most prospectors in the room expressed regret or even outrage that this nugget would leave the country – although no doubt they would have done the exact same thing: sell it to the highest bidder.

And they even might get their wish because the story doesn’t end here. The Australian government might declare the nugget a National Treasure – and I think they should – and then Andy wouldn’t be able to export it.

Ik werk momenteel in de pub van Ora Banda, een gehucht dat slechts door middel van een gravelweggetje met de buitenwereld is verbonden en zegge en schrijven vier permanente inwoners heeft. Lekker rustig zul je denken, en inderdaad de Ora Banda pub is nou niet direct een happening place, maar er stoppen genoeg lokale goudzoekers, stuk voor stuk eersteklas wereldvreemde, eenzame, alcoholistische, kettingrokende mannen voor een biertje om het leven hier een beetje boeiend te houden.

Scotty bijvoorbeeld, die claimt een topgoudmijn uit te baten. Hij beweert wel meer dingen, namelijk dat hij is of was:

• de achterneef van Kevin Rudd, de vorige premier van Australie.
• de achterachterkleinzoon van William Tipple Smith, de man die als eerste goud in Australie vond.
• de ex-drummer van Pearl Jam
• een mijnbouwingenieur met een diploma in sound engineering
• een ex-bankier met een salaris van 200.000 dollar per jaar

Het enige dat ik met zekerheid kan zeggen is dat hij de backpackermeisjes die achter de bar staan lastigvalt, hij heel veel sjekkies rookt en hij elke avond voordat de pub sluit een fles goedkope port aanschaft.

Naast Scotty bestaat de clientele uit ondermeer Hank the Wank, Chickenman en Spin, maar daarover later meer.

“Kijk nou, deze steen zit barstensvol goud,” riep ik tegen de man die me een rondleiding in Davyhurst gaf.

“Fools gold, mate”, was het antwoord.

Oftewel gekkengoud of pyriet

Het landschap van de goudvelden van West-Australië is bezaaid met verlaten open pit mijnen. Als het goud op is, of de goudprijs instort, trekken de bedrijven verder en laten ze enorme gaten in de grond achter. Plus de fikse hopen grond, zogenaamde tailings, die uit die gaten zijn gekomen. Op die verwerkte hopen grond, waar ooit het goud in heeft gezeten, wil niks meer groeien. Tegenwoordig worden mijnbedrijven geacht de natuur weer enigszins te herstellen, maar niemand doet iets aan de schade die al is aangericht. De verkrachting van het landschap lijkt hier overigens niemand iets te kunnen schelen. Het hoort erbij, is zo’n beetje de houding. En bovendien we hebben bush genoeg hier, dus die paar gaten in de grond, ach, wat kan ons dat schelen.

En ze hebben hun voordelen, die mijnbergen, als je er op klimt, heb je prima ontvangst voor je mobiele telefoon.

Note to self: the fact that you are not finding any gold doesn’t mean it can’t be done.
